How to track QR code scans
Updated November 3, 2026
A normal static QR code cannot count scans, because the phone goes straight to your content. To track scans you need a dynamic QR code, which sends people through a short link first.
Why static codes cannot be tracked
A static code holds your final destination inside the pattern. Nothing passes through a server, so nobody can count the visits that came from the code.
How tracking works
A dynamic code holds a short address. When someone scans it, that address records the scan and then sends them on to your destination in a fraction of a second. The visitor sees the destination as normal.
What you can measure
The typical data is:
- Number of scans, and scans over time
- Device type, such as iPhone or Android
- Approximate location, such as country or city
- Which code was scanned, if you use a different code for each placement
Get useful results
Make one code per place or campaign, such as one per poster or one per shop. Then you can compare which one performs. Use a short call to action so people know why to scan.
Privacy
Scan data is usually aggregate. If your landing page collects personal data, follow the privacy law that applies to you and tell people in your privacy policy.
In PurpleQR
Dynamic codes include scan analytics for scan counts, devices and locations. They are part of Pro, and every new account gets a 7-day trial with no card required. Static codes are not tracked.
