Static vs dynamic QR codes: which one should you use?

Updated November 3, 2026

Both kinds look the same and scan the same way. The difference is what is stored inside the pattern, and that decides whether you can change the code after printing.

What is a static QR code?

A static QR code stores your content directly in the pattern, such as a web address, a block of text or Wi-Fi details. Nothing sits between the phone and your content.

Because of that, a static code can never be edited. If the link changes you have to make and print a new code. It also cannot count scans, since no server is involved.

  • Works offline for text and Wi-Fi codes
  • Does not depend on any company staying in business
  • No scan statistics
  • Cannot be changed after printing

What is a dynamic QR code?

A dynamic QR code stores a short web address. When someone scans it, that address sends them on to your real destination, and you control where it goes from your account.

This lets you fix a wrong link, change a campaign, or switch to a new landing page without reprinting anything. It also lets the service count scans, devices and locations.

  • Edit the destination any time
  • Scan counts, devices and locations
  • Shorter, cleaner patterns that scan more easily
  • Needs an active account, so it can pause if a plan lapses

Which should you choose?

Use a static code when the content will never change and you want it to work forever with no account: a Wi-Fi password, a fixed contact card, a serial number, or a link to a page you own and will keep.

Use a dynamic code when the code is printed in quantity or placed somewhere costly to change, such as packaging, posters, menus, signs or business cards, or whenever you want to measure results.

A quick rule of thumb

Ask yourself: would reprinting this be annoying or expensive? If yes, use dynamic. If the content is permanent and you never need statistics, static is simpler and free of ongoing dependencies.

How PurpleQR handles both

In PurpleQR, static codes are free to design and keep working forever. Dynamic codes, scan analytics, hosted landing pages and bulk creation are part of Pro. Every new account gets a 7-day trial of Pro with no card required. If a plan ends, static codes keep working and dynamic codes pause until you upgrade. Nothing is deleted.
